World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) is being accused of false advertising and “cultural insensitivity” amid allegations that tomorrow’s Punjabi Prison match may actually be held inside a Pakistani Penitentiary cage.
“This is just more blatant racial stereotyping in pro wrestling,” said Baadshah Pehalwan Khan, a Pakistani pro wrestler who has wrestled in countless Pakistani Penitentiary matches.
“It’s like confusing a TLC match with an Elimination Chamber match — they’re totally different.”
Although Randy Orton will square off against Jinder Mahal in what WWE is calling a Punjabi Prison, the double-caged bamboo structure is the standard lockup for criminals in the Pakistani capital of Islamabad.
WWE issued a statement claiming the misnomer was an “honest mistake,” but leaked documents reveal the company considered numerous other names for the match, including:
- Jaipur Jailhouse
- Delhi Dungeon
- Bbubaneswar Brig
- Raipur Reformatory
- Calcutta Clink
The confusion surrounding the match is surprising, because WWE has never been accused of employing racial or cultural stereotypes in the past.
